Unusual Edo Period Arita Plate
Underglaze blue Arita porcelain plate with shaped polychrome border, c. 1770.
Dimensions: Approximately 8⅜” in diameter.
Decoration:
The unusually shaped narrow border is decorated with a polychrome and gold floral design.
The interior border and central designs are of cobalt blue, the central design having gilt highlights.
This type of blue and gilt decoration is illustrated and discussed in Shimura, “The History of Imari, The Symbols and Mysteries of Antique Japanese Porcelain” at pages 121 – 122.
This combination of shaped narrow polychrome border with blue and white Arita primary decoration is very unusual.
The reverse is decorated with a simple karakusa vine and three concentric blue circles.
The base bears five kiln spurs in an X pattern and an apocryphal Chenghua mark within a blue circle.
Condition: Rim hairlines; otherwise in excellent condition consistent with age and usage. Please examine the photos; they are part of the description.
