19th C. Staffordshire Transferware Dark Blue U.S. Capitol Dish
Dark blue historical Staffordshire transferware U.S. Capitol Pattern Dish from Enoch Woods shell border series. c.1818-46
Dimensions: Approximately 7¾”diameter.
According to a Transfer Collectors Club web display, "Blue Printed Pottery of an Historic Nation", the view on this plate of the Capitol building is as it appeared in 1814 just prior to the British burning its exterior.
Furthermore, it only appears on plates of this size and of 6½”diameter.
Marked on reverse with the impressed mark “ENOCH WOOD & SONS BURSLEM SEMI CHINA WARRANTED” surrounding an eagle symbol, and a printed mark of an eagle holding a banner reading “E PLURIBUS UNUM”, a stars and stripes shield, and the words“The CAPITOL WASHINGTON”.
Condition: In excellent condition consistent with age and usage.
