19th Century Chinese Export Small Canton Platter
Blue and white Canton plate, first half 19th century.
Dimensions: Approximately 9¾” x 6⅝”
Decoration:
The border is decoration is more complex than is typical. Above the typical diaper pattern is a thin band of vertical lines.
Below the diaper pattern, rather than the usual rain and cloud pattern, the vertical lines are edged with a series of elongated loops.
The cavetto is decorated with a whirling rather than a diaper pattern.
The central scene is naively executed with buildings, islands, a bridge without figures, a sampan, other boats, mountains, trees, and rocks.
For a discussion of Canton scenes and borders see Madsen & White, “Chinese Export Porcelains” (2009), and Forbes, “Hills and Streams: Landscape Decoration on Chinese Export Blue and White Porcelain” (1982).
Condition: Rim flea bite, chips on reverse; otherwise in excellent condition consistent with age and usage.
