Ironstone printed shell shaped dessert dishes with printed design and overpainting, c. 1820.

Dimensions: Each approximately 9¼” x 8”.

Decoration:

The center is decorated with an oriental garden scene within a scroll. The scene includes a dignitary seated at a desk, three women, and a child. In the background are plants, trees, and a tall gilt table.

Surrounding this are flowers and two cartouches each containing a Daoist emblem. All of these are imposed on a circular diaper pattern.

The reverse bears a transfer printed crown above a banner bearing the words “Patent Ironstone China”.

A plate of this pattern is illustrated and discussed in Halliday & Zeller, “Chinoiserie, Printed British Ceramics in the Chinese Style 1750 – 1900 at p. 273.

Condition: Both have slight rubbing to painted decoration, one has minor losses in the painted background diaper decoration; otherwise in excellent condition consistent with age and usage. Please examine the photos; they are part of the description.
