Japanese export porcelain platter, c. 1850.

 

Dimensions: Approximately 15” x 11¾” x 2¼”.

 

Decoration:

The platter is decorated with a background pattern of blossoms on a blue field interrupted by celadon swirls and cartouches of pine trees and seaweed.

 

In the center is the image of a large celadon carp.

 

The reverse is decorated with floral sprays.

 

Three blue bands surround the foot.

 

The base is decorated with a blue band and bears a maker’s mark of an unknown potter and bears a single kiln spur.

 

Examples of pieces using this color scheme and bold designs can be found in “Complete Catalog of Shibata Collection” published by the Kyushu Ceramic Museum.

 

Condition: In excellent condition consistent with age and usage. Please examine the photos; they are part of the description.
